Postgame Notes: B’s Tops Canes 5-3

Raleigh, NC - The Black & Gold traveled into Carolina with a monkey on their backs - an 0-0-4 record last season against the Hurricanes hat they had already mentally turned the page on, but successfully made it evident on the score sheet tonight - with a 5-3 victory over the Southern rivals. All thanks to the game-winner from Krejci, a Chara PP tally, a beautiful goal from Horton dancing through the Carolina D, a shorty from Marchand that started it all off and an empty-netter from Seguin (while on the PP) that sealed the win.

Check out the full boxscore and game recap on BostonBruins.com - and the Bruins Beat later tonight once we hit the ground in Boston. With the flight about to take off from Raleigh, here are post-game quotes from the locker room…

Nathan Horton….
On how the hard fought victory feels…
Yeah, it was. They came back there at the end of the second, we were still tied, so I think we knew we could win. We just kept pushing and it came right down to the end.

On what was said after Carolina tied the game…
We talked about being still tied, we’re not out of it, it’s a tie game. We had 20 minutes, I think we would take that coming in knowing that we were tied going into the third. Twenty minutes for a win and that’s what happened.

On the Krejci goal…
It was obviously a great play by Dougie. He’s got so much patience and is such a good player, sees the ice so well. Found Dave on the side of the net and Dave’s not going to miss that. A big goal for us.

Zdeno Chara…
On setting the tone early…
Well, we don’t go back to last year even though we knew we didn’t have a good series with them, we want to focus on this year and this season. I think having a good start in any game is a big plus for your team, get on the opposite team and create turnovers. That’s always big, we had a good start, but then we kind of slid back and we gave them a little bit too much. They founnd a way to come back in the game. It was a good game, it was up and down.

On what the key was to finishing off the Canes….
We tried to calm our game down, tried to focus on the way we play without the puck. We were way more disciplined, as far as the play goes. Came down to making a nice play at the end.

On a big offensive night for him…
It’s nice to be rewarded for that. But our main priority is playing good defense and shutting the top lines down. If I can add on top of that some offense, it’s good.

Starting goalie Anton Khudobin….
On how he felt and how the D was in front of the net…
Felt great at the start as always like that, first game of the season pretty much. I tried to expect lots of shots from high. Maybe they tried to test me but they didn’t actually. I feel after that I felt good, I stopped a couple shots and the game goes on.

On bouncing back from the goals at the end of the second…
Yeah, that’s always great. When you bounce back, get the win, that’s the most important to get that W.

On what the win does for his confidence going forward…
It’s always good, it’s always makes your confidence go up. But, it’s still just one game and one win. It’s a long time ahead, you have to work on and just keep going.

David Krejci, who net the go-ahead goal in the third…
On the team being ready to play in the first five games…
Well, I think we learned from last year, we had a pretty bad start. This year we’re ready to go, we know it’s a short season, it’s important to get points early in the season. We tried to get as many points as we can and I think we got 9 out of 10, so that’s pretty good.

On the faceoff wins being a factor…
Especially in the first period, I know I was doing well on the draw. I think that the whole team, I looked up after the first and I think it was like 70 percent, so it’s good to see. You play with the puck and I feel in the first period we had legs, we were skating wells and we were making passes tape to tape. It’s really important to win the draw and start with the puck. I think tonight it was another day - good day for the faceoffs. We got two points.

Dougie Hamilton, looking as poised as ever, who set up Krejci’s game-winner…
On Peter Chiarelli announcing that he was staying with the Bruins….
I don’t know if I really feel relief, but just really overall excitement. It’s been my dream ever since I was a little kid to play in the NHL, so I think for me it’s a dream come true. I just want to keep on getting better and having fun.

On how his teammates have been helping him out and how it helps his confidence…
Yeah it does, I think all the players here are really good, so it makes it easier on me. They’re always in good position, I know where they are when I have the puck on most plays. I think it’s been a lot of fun so far with those guys and them complimenting me and stuff like that.
