Pregame Notebook: Pivotal Game 4 on Tap - 2013 Boston Bruins Playoffs:

BOSTON, MA - The Bruins are set to face off against the Chicago Blackhawks in a pivotal Game 4 at TD Garden tonight. Every game is important, yes, but so far this postseason, no match-up has been more significant than tonight.

A win for the Bruins helps them maintain home-ice advantage and take a 3-1 series lead, while the Blackhawks are hoping to steal a victory from the Garden crowd and head back to their own barn with the series knotted at 2-2.

Both teams held their respective pregame skates Wednesday morning in preparation for the night’s battle. The Bruins’ lineup appeared to be the same as in Game 3. For the Blackhawks, Marian Hossa - a surprise scratch last game - is expected to be back in their lineup, alongside Patrick Sharp and Michal Handzus (see below for projected lineups).

“They’re going to come out hard, it’s a real big game for both teams,” said Bruins’ defenseman Dennis Seidenberg. “The first goal is going to be huge, so I definitely expect a big push from the start.”

Game Four Preview: CHI @ BOS:

BostonBruins.com – The Bruins have a chance to take a 3-1 series lead over the Chicago Blackhawks in Game Four of the Stanley Cup Final tonight at TD Garden. But even though the B’s have seemingly shutdown the Blackhawks’ offense over the past five periods of action, they are staying focused on the task at hand - Game Four.

“We’ve been in this position before this year in the playoffs and you’ve got to go out there and play on your toes and play to win,” said Milan Lucic of how the Bruins are preparing for Game Four. “You got to approach it the same way the Hawks are going to approach it and that’s play to win and it’s the Stanley Cup Final. There’s no gimmes – I know we are up 2 to 1 – but there’s no reason to be overconfident about anything right now because, as the series goes on, it gets tougher and tougher. The series is long from over.”

Lucic expects the Blackhawks to be raring to go in an effort to head back to Chicago with the Cup Final tied at two. As a result, No. 17 believes Game Four is a pivotal game of the series.

“I think, as every series goes along, every game gets bigger and bigger and we know what this game means for them and we know what this game means for us,” he said. “Lots to look forward to, they are going to bring their best and we need to bring ours.”

Seidenberg Earns 'The Jacket' :

BostonBruins.com - Monday night, following the Bruins’ 2-0 shutout of Chicago to take Game 3, one leader in the spoked-B passed on the “Player of the Game Jacket” to another.

Though, this leader often paves the way by thwarting others’ paths.

After the B’s had take a 2-1 series lead over the Blackhawks, a very demanding and intense leader in Chris Kelly passed along the jacket he had been given from Adam McQuaid to defensive leader and shutdown presence Dennis Seidenberg.

Players like Kelly and Seidenberg often go unnoticed to the public eye on a nightly basis. Everyone notices Zdeno Chara’s 6-foot-9 force out on the ice, or Tyler Seguin’s speed. The pair haven’t been putting up offensive numbers, but they do what the Bruins like to call the “little details” the right way.

BOSTON, MA - Gregory Campbell is just about everything you could want a ‘Boston Bruin’ to be.

Tough, hard to play against, not afraid to drop the gloves, will dive to knock the puck out of the zone, will work hard to put the puck in the net, and throw his body to block a shot, like when he sprawled out to block Evgeni Malkin’s slapshot and wound up with a broken leg (of course, after he had finished his penalty kill shift on one leg).

Campbell’s blue-collar mentality has been documented well on this site, ever since he was traded from Florida to Boston, with Nathan Horton, on June 22, 2010.

Recently, the centerman has been lauded for finishing that penalty kill shift and showing the “do whatever it takes” mentality. And really, it’s not so much about the specific shift, but more that it was a glimpse into just what Campbell consistently brings to the Bruins and the character that the entire team represents.

Commitment to Defense Key for Bruins:

BOSTON, MA – Everything starts with defense for the Boston Bruins. That commitment to the defense-first mentality set forth by Head Coach Claude Julien has the B’s two wins away from winning the Stanley Cup.

In the Eastern Conference Finals against the Pittsburgh – the league’s highest scoring team – the Bruins held the high-powered Penguins to just two goals in a four-game sweep. Penguins’ stars Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Jarome Iginla were all held without a point.

The lockdown defense has carried over to the Stanley Cup Final. In Game One, the Bruins got away from their system, surrendering a pair of two-goal leads in an eventual 4-3 triple overtime loss to the Blackhawks. And in the first period of Game Two they allowed Chicago to outshoot them, 19-4. If it were not for a stellar showing from Tuukka Rask, they may have been down more than just 1-0.

But over the last six periods (the final two of regulation and overtime in Game Two, and all of Game Three) the Bruins have kept the Blackhawks off the board. A huge part of that has been Rask, who has allowed just seven goals in his last seven games. Though the Bruins’ smothering of the Blackhawks, especially in Game Three, has been key.

- Gregory Campbell, with a pretty profound statement regarding his time as a Bruin, which began when he was traded to the spoked-B in 2010

Campbell has been recovering following surgery to his broken leg (see: infamous shot-blocking penalty kill shift), and is now back around the team. He spoke to media for the first time today since his injury.

“It’s a huge help, obviously. We’ve gotten better, a lot better, as the season has gone on. They’re not trying to play goalie, they’re just trying to be in the lane. All the other guys are taking care of their ice, keeping their head up, looking to guys behind them or in front of them. Dennis, for example, today, he blocked a lot of shots. Our D did a tremendous job during the playoffs doing that. I like that, as long as they block it and don’t let it go through, we’ll be all set.”

Dennis Seidenberg (seated next to him in the Player of the Game jacket during this interview), led with six blocked shots in the win, and has blocked 20 shots in the three games so far this series.

Overall, Johnny Boychuk’s 57 blocked shots lead the postseason. Seidenberg comes in next with 49, and Zdeno Chara is fourth with 38.
