Pregame vs Sens: Marchand Back Skating, Bergeron Possibility for Tonight

image

BOSTON, MA - A nice sight this morning to see Brad Marchand back skating with the team during morning skate at TD Garden for the first time since April 10, when he sustained a “mild concussion” in New Jersey. The B’s held a pregame skate prior to facing off against the Senators tonight in their fifth and final meeting on the season.

Though the forward is not yet taking contact, that will be the next step in his recovery, as he has been skating and “feeling good.”

“I feel pretty good. Today is my first team practice, and I felt pretty good out there,” said Marchand post-skate. “I’m not really sure when I can be back. I’m still going to talk to the trainers after the practice here today and kind of see where we’re at, but it’s a step in the right direction.”

“I skated yesterday and I felt pretty good, and then today. I haven’t really been off that long, so I mean it’s, my hands and everything have still got it, but I felt pretty good, so again hopefully I’ll continue to get better.”

Patrice Bergeron joined in line rushes for the first time today, centering Tyler Seguin and Milan Lucic. He remains a possibility for tonight’s lineup, as the center, coaches and B’s training staff will all be exercising caution with his insertion back into game action. Bergeron has missed six games since he first sustained a moderate concussion back on April 2, the last time the B’s faced Ottawa.

As on Saturday morning in Carolina, when Patrice spoke to media for the first time, he said this morning he was “feeling good” and felt close to a return, but was going to leave it up to Coach and the doctors to determine if he would be back or not.

“I obviously want to get back out there. I feel good. I feel confident,” said Bergeron. “I don’t feel cautious. We’re taking our time and there’s a reason for that, so that I’m not hesitant and I feel good.”

“The doctors and the trainers have always done a great job with me and all the other guys as well,” he added.

“It’s one of things it’s always hard to go through. I’ve had enough of it,” said Bergeron, on the frustration of being out. “It’s one of those things where at the same time, they said I was optimistic because of the way that I felt, and the Bruins did a good job of making sure I was taking the time to heal properly.”

Tuukka Rask was the first goalie off at morning skate, after goaltending coach Bob Essensa worked with both netminders for a while during the practice. As for the Senators, the B’s should expect to see Craig Anderson between the pipes for the first time this season against Boston, as he’s been back from since injury and most recently, put up a 33-save shutout performance on Friday in a 2-0 win over New Jersey.

Defenseman Dougie Hamilton, after being a healthy scratch the past two games to get rest and get a different perspective of the game from up top, will be back in the lineup tonight. Coach Julien said that with nine healthy defenseman, he plans to “rotate some players in and out here” heading down the final seven-game stretch. Andrew Ference will be the healthy scratch tonight.

Following the rest, Hamilton said, “I feel refreshed and eager to play.”

“Just to be able to sit up there and learn and watch with Jarvy [Coach Jarvis], it was good. So just a different perspective, and obviously, it’s a lot more fun playing and being in the room and I guess being part of the team, but it was good for me.”

Watch Dougie Hamilton’s “Live Look-In” from the bench at pregame skate earlier today in New Jersey (amidst chirps from his teammates, of course…)

Brad Marchand scattering the bucket of pucks for the Bruins’ pregame skate at Air Canada Centre Saturday morning in Toronto.

The juxtaposition of these photos was pure luck, as I went to snap a few photos of the group before skate, and No. 63 happened to dump the pucks at the exact same moment….

Also, in photo #2, you see Dougie Hamilton starting to crack a smile - just after this was taken, he skated over by the bench and joked, “you don’t want a close-up of me in the photo??”

Dougie’s Hat Trick

BOSTON, MA
- Have you ever heard of a 6-foot-5 leprechaun?

Well, 19-year-old Bruins defenseman Dougie Hamilton took on that role Friday afternoon, as he visited Boston Children’s Hospital to spend time with the patients and make St. Patrick’s Day arts and crafts - all while donning some festive hats.

When he was younger (which wasn’t all that long ago), Dougie used to think it was pretty amazing to always see professional athletes and NHL players helping out and being able to give back to their communities.

With the schedule this season, that hasn’t allowed a lot of down time for the B’s to be as active around Boston, but Dougie was certainly excited to get the opportunity to visit Children’s following Friday’s practice.

“It’s been fun to be able to meet them and spend some time with them,” he said on meeting with the kids. “I’m pretty excited to be here.”

And for the visit, he was given a few hat options to try out (watch a pretty funny video of that here), including one that matched his hair pretty well (pictured above with the pippi-longstocking-esque hat)….

“It matches my hair, so it works out well for me,” he joked, before adding that he received a few kidding comments about the hat.

“There’s been a few,” he said. “It’s kind of funny, but it’s been fun and the kids like it, too.”

Having seen others out in the community before, the defenseman was happy he could get the chance to brighten some days.

“You just put a smile on their face and help out…they’ve been doing well today,” he said, on the patients being vibrant and having a good time.

The arts and crafts included decorating rainbow hockey pucks (no tell-tale sign if they’ll lead to golden goals for the D-man, though…) and Hamilton joked that he doesn’t think he’s as good at arts and crafts as he is at defense.

Dougie also talked about how important the outreach is for Boston, and how happy he is to get to be a part of it and represent the spoked-B.

“It’s pretty exciting to be able to do this and give back.”

Dougie Developing

BOSTON, MA - Dougie Hamilton has had quite the rookie season. He leads Bruins’ defenseman with 10 points (one goal, nine assists) and has been the engineer of a number of game-winning plays – he also has two assists in the past two games.

As of late, however, Bruins’ Head Coach Claude Julien has been careful to throw Hamilton out on the ice in every critical situation. It has not been that Hamilton isn’t capable of getting the job done, more than it has been Julien wanting the 19-year-old to learn and gain confidence, rather than be let down if he makes a mistake.

Already Poised Hamilton Striving to Improve

BostonBruins.com – The “Teach Me How to Dougie” t-shirts have already found their way to Causeway Street. The Dougie dance moves have popped up on the jumbotron. And the chants of “Dougie, Dougie” have echoed through the Garden.

There is no doubt that the Dougie Hamilton era in Boston has begun. Through 11 games, the 19-year-old, rookie defenseman has been called poised enough times to last a lifetime.

But, it is so true. The 6-foot-5, 199 pounder patrols the ice as well as any defenseman on the Bruins roster. His ability to fit the puck through the slightest of seams on a breakout, his knack for getting his shot from the point through traffic, and his smooth-as-silk skating have made the soft-spoken Toronto native an instant star across New England.

Hamilton Remains a Bruin

The official word is in - Dougie Hamilton is a Boston Bruin.

Tonight, 19-year-old Hamilton will suit up in the spoked-B against the Hurricanes, and he will remain with the Bruins for the duration of the 2012-13 season. B’s General Manager Peter Chiarelli officially announced the decision from the press box at Carolina’s PNC Arena just before Boston hit the ice for warm-ups.

DOUG-IE, DOUG-IE

Dougie Hamilton

When Dougie Hamilton arrived to Logan Airport for Training Camp on January 12, the 6-foot-5, blonde-haired 19-year-old - wide-eyed and grinning - had never played an NHL game.

He had never been on an NHL roster, never suited up in the spoked-B, never sat elbow-to-elbow in a stall next to an NHL veteran defenseman and Stanley Cup Captain that had been in the league since he was four years old. He had never walked out through the tunnel to the roar of 17,565 fans cheering, holding their breaths as they have countless times before in earnest of their revered hometown team hitting the ice. And he had certainly never heard the Boston faithful chanting “Doug-ie, Doug-ie” from the rafters.

A lot can change in two weeks.
