Game Recap: WSH 2, BOS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Joel Ward slammed home a rebound at 2:57 of overtime to give Washington a 2-1 victory over Boston on Wednesday night, sending the Capitals to the second round of the playoffs and ending the defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins’ hopes of a repeat.

Rookie Braden Holtby stopped 31 shots for Washington in Game 7 - the seventh one-goal game of the series. Matt Hendricks scored the Capitals’ other goal.

Tyler Seguin scored, and Tim Thomas made 26 saves for Boston.

Game Recap: BOS 4, WSH 3 (OT)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Tyler Seguin scored at 3:17 of overtime, Tim Thomas made 36 saves, and the Boston Bruins beat the Washington Capitals 4-3 on Sunday to tie the first-round Eastern Conference playoff series at three games apiece.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins never trailed, but needed a stolen pass and a deft bit of skating to finally get the decisive goal and avoid being eliminated by the seventh-seeded Capitals.

Game 7 is Wednesday night in Boston.

Game Recap: WSH 4, BOS 3

BOSTON (AP) - Troy Brouwer scored on a power play with 1:27 left, giving the Washington Capitals a 4-3 victory Saturday and moving the defending champion Boston Bruins a loss away from elimination.

Brouwer gave the Capitals a 3-2 series lead with his second goal of the playoffs, beating goalie Tim Thomas over the glove with a wrist shot from the right circle. It came with 37 seconds left on a slashing penalty against Benoit Pouliot.

The Bruins, who trailed 2-0 and 3-2, tied it at 8:47 of the third period on Johnny Boychuk's goal.

Game Recap: WSH 2, BOS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Playoff rookie Braden Holtby followed up a shaky outing with a superb one by making 44 saves Thursday night, and Alexander Semin scored the go-ahead goal, leading the Washington Capitals to a 2-1 victory over the reigning Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins that tied the first-round series at two games apiece.

Marcus Johansson put the puck past Tim Thomas less than 1 1/2 minutes after the opening faceoff, but Boston’s Rich Peverley tied it later in the first period. Semin put Washington ahead for good with 1:17 left in the second on a power-play goal, his second score of the series.

The best-of-seven Eastern Conference series shifts back to Boston for Game 5 on Saturday. Game 6 will be in Washington on Sunday.

Game Recap: BOS 4, WSH 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Zdeno Chara scored the tiebreaking goal during 4-on-4 play with less than 2 minutes left, and the reigning Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins finally solved playoff rookie goalie Braden Holtby, beating the Washington Capitals 4-3 Monday night to take a 2-1 lead in the first-round series.

Chara’s shot from the right circle appeared to get deflected on its way past Holtby. The Bruins captain also had two assists.

Tim Thomas, last season’s playoff MVP, made 29 saves.

Game Recap: WSH 3, BOS 2 (SO)

BOSTON (AP) - Brooks Laich scored in the fourth round of a shootout to give Washington a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night and help the Capitals keep pace in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Washington is tied with Buffalo with 86 points in pursuit of the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. The Sabres remain ahead because they have five games remaining and the Capitals have four.

The Bruins could have clinched a playoff berth with a win. The defending Stanley Cup champions will try again when they play the New York Islanders on Saturday.

Game Recap: BOS 5, TBL 2

BOSTON (AP) - Benoit Pouliot scored the tie-breaking goal midway through the third period, Zdeno Chara had three assists and the surging Boston Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2 on Tuesday night.

The Bruins won their third straight game despite two goals by Steven Stamkos, who leads the NHL with 55. Tampa Bay’s three-game winning streak ended.

Chara set up three Bruins goals after being honored in a pregame ceremony for reaching the 1,000-game mark in his career. He did that on Saturday night in a 4-2 road victory over the Los Angeles Kings and wrapped up the road trip on Sunday night with a goal in a 3-2 win at the Anaheim Ducks.
